Lagat warned against involvement in corrupt activities and emphasized the need for officers to respond firmly to crime.

A few days after inmates broke free from lawful custody at a Siaya court, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat visited the region, calling on police officers to uphold professionalism and work collaboratively.

Lagat warned against involvement in corrupt activities and emphasized the need for officers to respond firmly to crime, particularly cases involving human trafficking, illegal alcohol, and drug-related offenses.

On May 5, six suspects facing robbery with violence charges escaped from custody at the Siaya Law Courts, prompting the arrest and arraignment of 13 police officers believed to have been involved.

Those arrested were identified as Joan Komen, Philip Soita, Hannington Kidadi, Cyril Murombo, Michael Kipkemei, Collins Kibet, Erastus Makenzi, Samwel Ombesa, John Mulwa, Fanuel Chacha, Wallecks Asugo, Evans Toel, and David Matheka.

During his visit to the county, Lagat accompanied by Siaya County Police Commander Serah Koki reminded officers of their duty to uphold ethical standards.

He cautioned them against engaging in misconduct that could tarnish the reputation of the National Police Service.

“I urge you to always carry out your duties within the boundaries of the law and established police procedures,” stated Lagat during an unannounced visit to Ugunja Police Station.

The Deputy Inspector General said the visit was part of efforts to transform police facilities into centres of excellence. He later proceeded to neighbouring Busia County, where the body of an unidentified woman was discovered naked in a dam.

Officers from Ganga Police Station in Samia Sub-county reported that the body, believed to be that of a woman around 40 years old, had visible injuries around the mouth and extending to the left cheek.

Preliminary investigations suggest the victim may have been murdered elsewhere before the body was dumped in the dam, where it was later found floating.
