A candidate vying for the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat has raised concerns for his safety following an alleged physical attack by the current MP, Fred Chesebe Kapondi, on Saturday.

Patrick Chemosit reported suffering significant head injuries after being assaulted by the MP and several of his supporters.

Chemosit, who aims to challenge Kapondi in the 2027 elections, was returning home in his vehicle after attending a burial at Sacho village when the incident occurred in Kapkateny village.

Reports indicate that Kapondi, who was also present at the burial, had his group follow Chemosit, blocking his car before allegedly directing his "goons" to launch the attack.

"The MP stepped out of his vehicle, pulled out a pistol, and ordered around 15 of his supporters, armed with crude weapons, to assault me," Chemosit stated.

Chemosit’s driver, Francis Kiboi, also sustained an injury to his left hand. Both men received medical care at Bungoma Hospital.

Chemosit thinks the MP was displeased because he had openly criticized his development record during the funeral.

"I spoke ahead of him and received overwhelming cheers from the crowd, with many people even following me as I left. I believe this upset him. It’s well known that he often turns to violence when he feels he’s losing," Chemosit said.

Julius Kiptoo, the Police Commander for Kopsiro Sub County, confirmed that Kapondi and Chemosit have been called in to give their statements today.

"Yes, the incident did occur, and we are currently investigating it, as it appears to be connected to political disagreements," Kiptoo stated.

Kapondi has not answered phone calls or replied to text messages.
