Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has strongly condemned the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) and certain political figures for their criticism of the government’s affordable housing program, accusing them of spreading misinformation and neglecting the needs of everyday Kenyans.

Speaking at a Church of Christ in Africa service in Nairobi, where he was alongside President William Ruto, Sakaja defended both the housing levy and the inclusion of market facilities within the housing projects.

He expressed disbelief that COTU would oppose the construction of markets funded through the housing levy.

“If an affordable housing estate is completed and a market is established nearby, what’s wrong with that? The families living in these homes will rely on those markets for daily essentials. To those opposing this initiative shame on you!” Sakaja declared.

Sakaja rejected claims that the housing projects are unnecessary, saying that much of the criticism comes from leaders who are already living comfortably.

“We’ve heard some leaders say, ‘We didn’t ask the president to build houses.’ But those homes aren’t meant for you you live in mansions with seven toilets! Let others benefit. What are you really offering?” Sakaja challenged.

He also called on political leaders to stop using divisive language and instead embrace humility and genuine service to the people.

“Leaders need to remember that the positions we hold are not by our own strength, but by God’s will,” he emphasized.

“Stop stirring up the public. We inherited this country; we must leave it better than we found it.”

Governor Sakaja joined President William Ruto and other officials at a church service in Nairobi.
