The Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Issack Hassan, has praised the prompt interdiction of police officers linked to the death of blogger Albert Ojwang.

He emphasized that this action is vital for conducting a fair and comprehensive investigation.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, Hassan revealed that IPOA has already dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s controversial death while in police custody.

"The suspension of the officers involved sends a strong message that no one is above the law," Hassan stated.

"This step allows for an independent and thorough investigation to proceed without interference or intimidation."

Ojwang, a teacher and blogger recognized for his critical commentary on governance and social issues, was arrested and held in custody before his untimely death.

Police initially reported that Ojwang died by suicide, but this account has been contested by human rights organizations and political figures demanding greater transparency.

At the police station, Hassan assured Kenyans that IPOA is committed to conducting a rigorous investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.

"Our responsibility is to uphold the rule of law and safeguard citizens from police misconduct. We will exhaust all avenues to determine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Ojwang’s death," he affirmed.

Hassan also called on the public to remain patient and trust the investigative process, emphasizing that such inquiries require careful and detailed work.

"We urge the public to let the investigative team carry out their work without interference or unfounded speculation," he added.

He reaffirmed IPOA’s dedication to enhancing police accountability and restoring public trust in law enforcement agencies.

"We will persist in pushing for reforms that guarantee police officers act within legal boundaries and respect human rights at all times," Hassan said.

The interdiction of the officers follows increasing public outcry and demands from civil society for justice amid numerous cases involving deaths in police custody.

With the officers suspended, IPOA and other investigative bodies will collaborate to establish the facts surrounding Albert Ojwang’s death and ensure those responsible face accountability.
