Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati’s son, Emmanuel Chebukati, has shared his father’s final moments, painting a picture of a brave and jovial man.

Speaking at the burial service held at their home in Sabatia-Kiminini Constituency, Emmanuel recounted how he had just returned from a conference in Spain and brought back an authentic Spanish bullfighting hat for his father.

He placed it on his father’s head, and Chebukati’s response was filled with humor and confidence.

"I gave him the hat, and I put it on top of his head, and he immediately said to me, 'I feel like a bullfighter already,' and then he went on to say, 'Nobody can mess with me when I am in my bullfighting hat,'" Emmanuel narrated.

He described his father as a strong and fearless man in the public eye, but at home, he was a warm and loving father, husband, and brother.

"But through my eyes and the eyes of the family members seated here, you will see him as simply the best father, husband, and brother you'll ever have. It is said that if you think Chebukati is tough and doesn't smile, then you don't know Chebukati," he said.

Alongside Emmanuel, Chebukati’s other children, Jonathan and Rachel, also spoke, remembering him as a guiding figure who instilled strong values in them. They pledged to carry forward the lessons he taught them.

The former IEBC boss passed away on February 20, 2025 after battling brain cancer.
