Kibera court sentences man to death for robbery with violence

Isaac Khanga was found guilty of robbing two men of mobile phones and cash in separate incidents that took place on the night of November 3, 2024, around 11 pm, in the Kawangware Madiaba area of Dagoretti, Nairobi County.
A Kibera court has sentenced a man to death after convicting him on two counts of robbery with violence, following a case prosecuted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Isaac Khanga was found guilty of robbing two men of mobile phones and cash in separate incidents that took place on the night of November 3, 2024, around 11 pm, in the Kawangware Madiaba area of Dagoretti, Nairobi County.
The court heard that he stole a Tecno mobile phone worth Sh24,000 and Sh30,000 in cash from one victim, and a mobile phone valued at Sh15,000 from another.
According to the court, Khanga threatened to use actual violence on both victims immediately before the thefts.
The crimes were committed with the help of accomplices not before the court.
The prosecution, led by Counsel Ann Murage, proved both charges beyond reasonable doubt.
Khanga was formally charged on November 15, 2024, and the case was concluded within six months.
In her judgment, Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi noted that the death penalty remains lawful in Kenya and has not been declared unconstitutional.
Khanga received two death sentences, one for each count, although one will be held in abeyance.
