In Summary

IPOA confirmed that Ojwang died inside the Central Police Station and maintained that the CCTV system at OCS's office had been interfered.

In the ongoing probe over the death of Albert Ojwang, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) now says the blogger died inside Nairobi's Central Police Station.

In a statement released Friday by IPOA Chief Executive Officer Elema Halake, the authority outlined the extensive steps taken in its investigation, including a visit to the scene, documentation, the arrest of several suspects and preservation of evidence.

Additionally, IPOA confirmed that Ojwang died inside the Central Police Station and maintained that the CCTV system at OCS's office had been interfered.

"The deceased died while in custody at Central police station cells," stated IPOA.

"...the CCTV system located at OCS's office had been interfered with i.e., DVR power cable was disconnected, the DVR logs indicated that the operating discs had been changed and formatted on 8th June 2025 at 07:28:43hrs and 07:32:29hrs."

Blood samples were collected and compared, CCTV footage and police documents were seized, and statements were recorded from officers, detainees, and family members, IPOA said.

IPOA also attended the post-mortem and submitted forensic samples to the Government Chemist.

The post-mortem, conducted on June 10, 2025, concluded that the deceased died from a head injury due to blunt force trauma, neck compression, and multiple bruises—findings that contradict initial claims of suicide.

The revelation comes amid the arrest of two police officers, including Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam, a civilian and police constable James Mukhwana.

Talam was arrested on Friday in Eldoret as the probe into the murder continues.

Talam is considered a prime suspect after multiple witnesses and suspects implicated him during IPOA’s ongoing investigation.
