Two police officers arraigned over Nairobi street vendor shooting

The shooting took place along Moi Avenue during anti-police protests sparked by the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Two police officers accused of shooting a street vendor during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District have appeared in court.
On Thursday, Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono were arraigned at Milimani Law Courts over the June 17 incident where Boniface Mwangi Kariuki was shot in the head.
The officers were brought in wearing black trousers, heavy coats, and face masks and were held in court cells before their appearance.
The shooting took place along Moi Avenue during anti-police protests sparked by the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Kariuki, a masked street vendor, was shot at close range in broad daylight as demonstrators demanded justice for Ojwang.
He was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he is currently in the intensive care unit recovering.
The incident caused public outrage and was condemned by civil rights groups and some political leaders.
In response, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja ordered the immediate arrest of the two officers as investigations continue.
