Fraudsters swindle Sh200,000 from Boniface Kariuki’s father

According to family spokesperson Emily Wanjiru, the fraudsters contacted Johan claiming they were offering financial support for Boniface’s hospital treatment.
A group of scammers pretending to represent the Social Health Authority (SHA) has reportedly defrauded Johan Kariuki the father of Boniface Kariuki, the young man shot during the June 17 protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District of Sh200,000 through a mobile money scam.
According to family spokesperson Emily Wanjiru, the fraudsters contacted Johan claiming they were offering financial support for Boniface’s hospital treatment.
They managed to extract sensitive M-Pesa details from him and swiftly cleared his account.
Wanjiru further disclosed that one of the callers impersonated comedian and activist Eric Omondi, alleging he was speaking on behalf of the “Sisi Kwa Sisi” group.
The caller assured Kariuki that help was on the way, only to use the ruse to commit fraud.
The Kariuki family plans to address the media on Saturday, June 21, at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) at midday, where they will share an update on Boniface’s medical progress.
Boniface, 22, has so far undergone two surgical procedures to remove bullet fragments lodged in his head after he was shot during the chaotic demonstrations.
KNH’s Acting CEO, Dr. William Sigilai, confirmed that Boniface was admitted to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit at 3:16 pm in critical condition.
He had suffered a severe gunshot wound on the left side of his head, leading to extensive brain injury and profuse bleeding.
In connection with the shooting, two police officers Constables Klinzy Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono are currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station.
Their detention follows a court-sanctioned agreement to give prosecutors time to complete investigations.
The arrangement was made in coordination with the defense and presented before the Milimani Law Courts.
