In Summary

Central Region Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi, speaking on behalf of IG Kanja during a visit to Kariuki’s family, said two officers linked to the shooting have already been charged in court and remain in custody.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has assured the family of Boniface Kariuki that justice will be served after the street vendor was shot in the head at close range by police during the June 17 protests in Nairobi. Kariuki, who survived the shooting, is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

Central Region Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi, speaking on behalf of IG Kanja during a visit to Kariuki’s family, said two officers linked to the shooting have already been charged in court and remain in custody.

“I want to assure you that we are working closely with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served openly, fairly, and without compromise,” said Ndanyi.

He acknowledged the pain the family is facing and said the police share in their suffering. “We are part of the communities we serve, and when one of us is hurt, all of us are affected,” he added.

Kariuki’s family said they are overwhelmed by rising hospital bills, which have now reached Sh1 million. They revealed that Kariuki was the sole breadwinner and his absence has left them in financial distress.

The shooting has sparked widespread public outrage over police conduct during recent protests. Human rights groups have accused officers of using excessive force, calling for urgent accountability and reforms within the National Police Service.

Activists and leaders have urged the Interior Ministry and police leadership to act swiftly to end reported abuses and rebuild public trust. As investigations continue, Kariuki’s family and many Kenyans are hoping for a fair and transparent process that will deliver justice.
