In its report, the commission noted that alongside the fatalities, at least 400 people sustained injuries including protestors, police officers, and journalists , with 83 requiring specialised medical attention. Among them, eight were treated for gunshot wounds.

At least eight people were killed and more than 400 others injured during the June 25 nationwide demonstrations, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has revealed, raising alarm over what it termed as deepening human rights violations and disregard for the rule of law.

According to KNCHR, all eight fatalities were caused by gunshot wounds and occurred across six counties: Machakos (2), Makueni (2), Nakuru (1), Kiambu (1), Uasin Gishu (1), and Nyandarua (1).

The protests, which marked the first anniversary of the Gen-Z movement, saw heavy police presence and were staged in at least 23 counties.

“The right to life is sacrosanct. We condole with the families of the deceased and urge all actors to respect the sanctity of life,” said the commission's vice chairperson Dr Raymond Nyeris.

In its report, the commission noted that alongside the fatalities, at least 400 people sustained injuries — including protestors, police officers, and journalists — with 83 requiring specialised medical attention. Among them, eight were treated for gunshot wounds.

The KNCHR cited credible reports pointing to the use of excessive force by security agencies, including deployment of rubber bullets, live ammunition, and water cannons.

“There are credible reports of excessive force, which have resulted in numerous injuries,” the commission stated.

The rights body also flagged the infiltration of the protests by criminal elements, which it said contributed to episodes of looting, violence, and destruction of property in several towns.

Further, the commission took issue with the Communications Authority’s directive to suspend live media coverage of the protests, terming it an attack on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“We condemn the directive by the Communications Authority to halt live coverage of the protests,” KNCHR stated, insisting that it violates the right to media freedom and access to information.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates on the promotion and protection of human rights in the country during this period,” said Dr Nyeris.
