In Summary

The preliminary findings come amid increasing national and international outrage over the government’s response to the protests, which were largely peaceful until security officers unleashed force on demonstrators.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has revealed a disturbing pattern of state brutality and human rights violations during the nationwide protests held on June 25, with a preliminary report confirming the deaths of 19 people, injuries to over 500 others, and a series of abductions and sexual assaults.

In a statement released Friday evening, the commission documented that 531 individuals were injured during the protests, while 15 others were forcibly disappeared.

It further recorded 179 arrests and confirmed multiple incidents of sexual violence, including two individual rapes, two gang rapes, and one attempted gang rape.

“The commission strongly condemns all human rights violations and urge accountability from all responsible parties,” read part of the statement.

KNCHR expressed sorrow over the lives lost and extended messages of sympathy to grieving families while wishing the injured a quick recovery. A comprehensive report is expected to follow in the coming days.

The commission urged members of the public to share any information or complaints related to the protests through SMS to 22359, email to [email protected], or the toll-free line 0800 720 627.

The preliminary findings come amid increasing national and international outrage over the government’s response to the protests, which were largely peaceful until security officers unleashed force on demonstrators.

Spearheaded by Gen Z, the protests erupted across various parts of the country in opposition to economic hardship and allegations of police brutality.

While demonstrators initially marched peacefully, chaos broke out when police resorted to teargas, water cannons, and live ammunition to break up the crowds.

Reports of arbitrary arrests, torture, and disappearances quickly followed, with several protesters reportedly abducted by unidentified operatives.

Sexual violence cases further highlighted the extent of the violations, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights organisations.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi, the demonstrations were infiltrated by suspected criminals who looted and vandalised businesses.

Shop owners were left counting losses on Friday, as authorities promised to act against those responsible for the destruction.
