Siaya cop shoots dead superior, gets killed by fellow officers

According to police, Mwendwa attempted to flee the scene and was headed toward Ng’iya Girls’ High School when he was confronted and fatally shot by fellow officers.
A deadly shooting incident at Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County early Sunday morning has left two officers dead, with investigators probing whether a personal conflict or mental health crisis may have triggered the violence.
The incident unfolded around 6:00 a.m. when Constable Martin Mwendwa allegedly shot and killed his superior, Corporal Chesise, who was the officer commanding the station.
Authorities say Mwendwa used a G3 rifle to fire multiple rounds at the corporal inside his residential quarters, striking him in the chest and upper limbs.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula confirmed the incident, noting that officers responded immediately upon hearing gunshots.
According to police, Mwendwa attempted to flee the scene and was headed toward Ng’iya Girls’ High School when he was confronted and fatally shot by fellow officers.
While initial findings suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a personal disagreement, Commander Wafula said the investigation remains open, with mental health concerns also being considered.
“We are examining all possible angles, including psychological factors that may have influenced the constable’s actions,” Wafula stated.
The bodies of the two officers were transferred to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as detectives piece together the events that led to the fatal confrontation.
