Boniface Kariuki, hawker shot during protest, declared brain dead

Mwangi’s father, Jonah Kariuki, said the family had been called to the hospital at midnight on Sunday and informed about his son's condition.
The family of Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a street vendor who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during anti-police brutality protests in Nairobi, has confirmed that he is brain-dead.
Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, family representative Emily Wanjira said doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) had delivered the devastating update. She explained that while Mwangi’s vital organs remain functional, there is no brain activity.
“Mwangi has been declared brain dead. We understand the implications. Right now, we are simply waiting for the doctor’s final confirmation,” Wanjira told reporters.
Mwangi’s father, Jonah Kariuki, said the family had been called to the hospital at midnight on Sunday and informed about his son's condition.
"Tumeambiwa brain yake haifanyi kazi lakini roho inapiga," said Jonah.
Translation: We've been told his brain is dysfunctional, but his heart is beating.
According to the family, more bullet fragments remain lodged in Mwangi’s brain and have yet to be surgically removed.
He has so far undergone two separate operations at KNH in a bid to remove the bullet. He continues to receive intensive care and close medical supervision at the facility's ICU.
Earlier, Mwangi’s father, Jonah Kariuki, disclosed that the hospital bill had surpassed Sh1 million and was continuing to climb each day, calling on Kenyans to help foot the bill.
"Tunaomba usaidizi kutoka kwa Wakenya watusaidie," added Jonah.
Transalation: We are asking for help from Kenyans.
The family, deeply distressed by the ordeal, is demanding that justice be served. They urged the judiciary to take swift action by prosecuting and sentencing the police officers involved in the shooting.
