The announcement was made during a solemn ceremony held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the ACK Church in Siaya County.
Ida Odinga, wife of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has officially been appointed a canon at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Bondo, marking her transfer from the South Nyanza diocese to the Siaya-based church.
The announcement was made during a solemn ceremony held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the ACK Church in Siaya County.
Ida was accompanied by her husband, Odinga and members of their family.
The officiating priest formally declared, "Canon Doctor Ida Betty Odinga has been canonically appointed as a canon of the church," confirming her transition from her previous station in South Nyanza to her new role at St. Peter’s.
Ida was first honored as a canon in the Anglican Church of Kenya on October 23, 2024, during a ceremony in South Nyanza a recognition of her long-standing commitment to the church and service to God.
In her brief remarks at the event, Ida expressed gratitude and vowed to uphold her duties faithfully in her new assignment.
The title of Canon is traditionally granted within Anglican, Catholic, and certain Orthodox churches, and typically acknowledges individuals living or deceased who have demonstrated exemplary devotion.
It permits them to be included in the church’s official register of saints or spiritual leaders, although the title in Anglican tradition often honors living members for dedicated service.
