Amin said eleven police officers were seriously injured in the clashes, government offices attacked, and firearms stolen—some of which have already been linked to new crimes.

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin has dismissed claims that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is under investigation over the violence that broke out during the June 25 protests, saying he has not been summoned by police.

“It is not true that we summoned Gachagua,” Amin told reporters on Monday.

He added that the former Deputy President, like all citizens, is subject to the law. “He does not enjoy any immunity from prosecution. If in our investigations he is found to have aided or abetted any criminal activity, then appropriate action will be taken,” he said.

Giving an update on last Wednesday’s events, Amin described the unrest as a tragic takeover of peaceful demonstrations by organised criminal groups.

“What began as a peaceful demonstration turned into violence, orchestrated by well-organized actors who invaded the protests, endangering lives and destroying property,” he said.

Amin said eleven police officers were seriously injured in the clashes, government offices attacked, and firearms stolen—some of which have already been linked to new crimes. Businesses, police stations, and ATMs were also vandalized during the chaos.

He further revealed that intelligence gathered by investigators has confirmed reports of sexual violence during the mayhem.

In what he termed as a chilling development, Amin said people were deliberately brought into Nairobi to carry out planned acts of destruction.

“Evidence shows people were transported to Nairobi to execute violence,” he stated, warning of a growing threat to public safety.

Amin said the police will not stay silent while national security is under attack. “The police must not remain silent when security is being breached,” he warned.

So far, 448 suspects have been charged in connection with the unrest.

The charges include robbery with violence, murder, terrorism, and gang rape. Detectives have also recovered a pistol stolen during the attack on Kikuyu Police Station, one of several weapons believed to have fallen into criminal hands during the riots.
