OCS Taalam granted time to decide on inquest bid in blogger Ojwang’s death

Taalam is linked to the events surrounding Ojwang’s death on June 8 while in police custody.
Samson Taalam, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, has been granted time by the court to determine how he wishes to proceed with a petition seeking an inquest into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang’.
Taalam is linked to the events surrounding Ojwang’s death on June 8 while in police custody.
He has approached the High Court, requesting that the matter be handled through an inquest rather than a criminal trial, arguing that the circumstances require an impartial judicial examination rather than prosecution founded on what he describes as premature assumptions.
His lawyer, Danstan Omari, informed the court that the majority of the reliefs sought in the petition about 90 percent had already been overtaken by recent developments.
As such, they intend to consult Taalam thoroughly before charting the next course of action.
“We will ask for the matter to be mentioned on Friday so we can take full instructions from our client. Once that is done, we’ll be in a better position to advise on the way forward,” Omari told the court on Wednesday.
The presiding judge concurred, noting: “We must give Omari time to get proper instructions. Let’s reconvene on Friday.”
The case will now be mentioned on July 4, when the court is expected to receive further directions, including a possible withdrawal of the petition.
