Opposition leaders have cautioned the government against deploying police to suppress or intimidate youth participating in the Saba Saba commemorations slated for Monday, July 7.

Concluding their two-day tour of the Western region in Kitale, the leaders vowed to monitor the situation across counties and warned the Kenya Kwanza administration against using force to disrupt peaceful assemblies.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka emphasized that the opposition will be closely watching the day’s events and would not hesitate to pursue legal action should police engage in brutality.

“We will be monitoring the Saba Saba meetings, and if law enforcement resorts to violence, we will respond through legal avenues,” Kalonzo said.

He added that the People’s Restorative Justice Commission (PRJC), chaired by former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, would be on standby to document any state abuses during the protests.

“The commission will collect evidence of any excesses committed by police. We are ready to act,” he stated.

A host of opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, ex-Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, Cleophas Malala, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, were received with enthusiasm by Kitale residents.

The leaders condemned an alleged attack on their convoy at Chwele Market in Bungoma, accusing National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula of orchestrating the chaos.

“These attacks, allegedly incited by Wetang’ula, will not shake our resolve. Bungoma has moved on, and the tide is turning,” they said.

Governor Natembeya accused Wetang’ula of enlisting youths through Sirisia MP John Waluke to incite violence.

He referenced a widely circulated video showing Waluke allegedly distributing cash to a group of youth who later lit bonfires and blocked roads to disrupt the opposition caravan. The group also reportedly hurled stones at the leaders’ motorcade along the Mayanja-Chwele route.

Gachagua reaffirmed the opposition’s unity, revealing that they will rally behind a single presidential candidate to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

“We are united, and we will support one candidate. Ruto’s time is limited we will make sure he serves only one term,” he told the crowd.

The former DP also accused the ruling coalition of silencing dissent through intimidation and specifically mentioned Governor Natembeya as a victim of such tactics.

“President Ruto must stop persecuting those who speak up. No amount of harassment will stop us from freeing this country,” he said.

Former Interior CS Matiang’i raised concern over the country’s current political direction, calling on citizens to stand with the opposition for a leadership shift.

“Our movement speaks with one voice. We are committed to restoring good governance and safeguarding Kenya’s future,” he said.

Eugene Wamalwa and Cleophas Malala echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Kenya Kwanza regime of betraying Kenyans through unfulfilled promises and poor governance.
