ODM rebukes claims of Raila’s waning support in Nyanza after teacher’s burial

Wanga emphasized that Raila’s historic contributions to democracy, justice, and national progress cannot be erased by misrepresentations in the media.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly rejected media reports suggesting that its party leader, Raila Odinga, is losing political ground in his Nyanza stronghold following events at the burial of the late teacher Albert Ojwang’ in Kakoth village, Homa Bay.
According to a report by The Standard, mourners allegedly used the funeral to express dissatisfaction with Raila’s collaboration with President William Ruto under the inclusive national dialogue platform. The report also claimed the crowd demanded justice for Ojwang’, who died in police custody.
However, in a firm statement issued by ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, the party termed the story as misleading and sensational.
“Albert’s burial brought together mourners from across the country from the coast, where he studied and taught, to Nairobi, where his life was cut short, and to Homa Bay, his ancestral home,” Wanga said.
“Despite the deep sorrow and high emotions, the funeral proceeded peacefully, contrary to predictions of chaos.”
Wanga emphasized that Raila’s historic contributions to democracy, justice, and national progress cannot be erased by misrepresentations in the media.
“ODM remains intact and resilient. Our recently concluded grassroots elections clearly reaffirmed our national dominance,” she said.
“Baseless attacks on Raila not only distort the truth but also belittle his sacrifices and the values he upholds.”
During the burial, leaders, relatives, and friends mourned Ojwang’, whose death has reignited public concern over human rights violations by security forces.
Speakers at the event dismissed accusations that their positions in government had made them indifferent to abuses like abductions and extra-judicial killings.
“There are people trying to exploit the Gen Z movement for selfish gain. But the youth are vigilant and will not be misled by opportunists peddling tribal division,” Wanga said.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo echoed the sentiment, asserting that their stance on justice has never changed.
“Whether in power or not, we’ve always stood on the side of justice. Those questioning our integrity clearly don’t understand our history—we have fought for this country for decades,” she said.
