In Summary

According to Cherargei, the spirit of the 1990 protests, rooted in the push for pluralism, democracy, and constitutional reforms, was honoured with the 2010 Constitution.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has backed the government’s decision to deploy large numbers of security personnel across Nairobi and other regions, saying it is a necessary step to maintain calm, safeguard lives and property, and prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the Saba Saba anniversary.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, July 7, Cherargei commended the National Police Service and other security agencies for their visible presence, especially in the capital, which has seen increased political activity.

“The heightened security in Nairobi CBD and across the country by security apparatus is to ensure normalcy, protection of property and lives by preventing criminals, goons, and economic saboteurs from taking advantage of today’s Saba Saba anniversary,” wrote Cherargei.

He observed that despite the tension surrounding the commemorations, the country remained stable, with essential services running and public offices open.

“The entire country Kenya is peaceful, and Kenyans are going about their daily duties uninterrupted as all government employees and offices are fully functional,” he added.

The senator also criticised the current wave of demonstrations being led mainly by young people and civil society groups, suggesting that the motives behind the protests differ from those of the original Saba Saba movement.

According to Cherargei, the spirit of the 1990 protests, rooted in the push for pluralism, democracy, and constitutional reforms, was honoured with the 2010 Constitution.

“The objects of Saba Saba struggle were fulfilled through promulgation of the Constitution 2010, and the agenda was clear then,” he posted. “Unlike now, where anarchists and political opportunists are plying their trade of lawlessness, looting of businesses, maiming and killings, coup and economic sabotage. This must come to a stop!!”

His remarks come at a time when a new wave of youth-led protests has taken shape under the revived Saba Saba banner. This year’s commemorations follow mass anti-Finance Bill demonstrations led by Generation Z in 2024, which have since grown into a broader call for reforms, including an end to police brutality, disappearances, and excessive use of state power.

Opposition leaders and civil society groups had called for peaceful protests to mark the day, which commemorates the July 7, 1990, demonstrations against the one-party rule of then President Daniel Arap Moi. Those protests, though met with police violence, sparked the movement that later brought multiparty democracy to Kenya.

While the government has said citizens have a right to protest, it has warned that violence, looting, or attempts to breach security zones will not be tolerated. On Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said police would be "gentle with citizens" but would deal "ruthlessly" with those causing chaos.

The National Police Service also warned demonstrators against entering protected areas, saying serious consequences would follow any disruption to public order.

By Monday afternoon, Nairobi remained calm but tense. Security officers stood guard across key areas, including the CBD and major entry points to the city. While some businesses remained closed and public transport faced delays in certain places, no major clashes or violence had been reported.
