In Summary

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be presented in court.

Nine suspects have been arrested in Kagio town, Kirinyaga County, following a police operation targeting individuals linked to recent acts of looting during the Saba Saba protests.

The intelligence-led operation was carried out across multiple estates in and around Kagio, after a report was filed at the Kagio Police Station. Officers recovered a range of stolen property, including high-end electronics and household goods.

Among the items recovered were a 50-inch LG television, a washing machine, a power backup unit, a CPU, and a computer monitor. Police also seized three glass tables, two mattresses, detergents, perfumes, and various foodstuffs.

According to preliminary investigations, the stolen items were traced to two premises, County Supermarket and Cash-Cash Club, which were looted during the recent demonstrations in the region.

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be presented in court. Police say efforts to track down more suspects and recover additional stolen goods are ongoing.

In a statement, the National Police Service cautioned members of the public against criminal behaviour during protests. “The Service remains vigilant and committed to protecting life and property across the country,” NPS warned.

The arrests in Kagio come amid a broader crackdown targeting those involved in looting and destruction of property during the Saba Saba protests, which affected several towns across the Mt Kenya region.

Last week in Nyeri, 21 individuals were arrested in connection with the June 25 demonstrations. Of these, 20 suspects linked to the looting of Naivas Supermarket were arraigned in court on June 27.

Eleven of the suspects pleaded guilty to theft and an alternative charge of handling stolen items, while the other ten denied the charges and were released on a bond of Sh100,000 each.

The suspects were found in possession of a variety of stolen goods, including mattresses and home appliances, during their arrest.
