Lake Victoria: Fisherman Dies in Boat Accident

A fisherman died during a capsizing incident in Lake Victoria near Oyamo Island, Siaya County early Sunday morning.

Reports indicate the fisherman lost his life after his boat overturned due to strong winds on the lake.

According to Calvins Omondi, chairman of the Oyamo Beach Management Unit, 57-year-old Chrispo Omuko drowned around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

He was in the company of two others when a windstorm hit, causing their boat to capsize.

While the other two managed to swim to safety and were rescued by fellow fishermen, Omuko perished in the tragedy.

Omondi says Omuko had already drowned by the time the rescue team arrived and had yet to retrieve his body.

He advised fishermen to exercise caution, particularly with the approaching long rains season.
