The listing recognises the annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, a natural wonder that has made the reserve world famous for its scale, spectacle, and ecological value.

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve has officially been entered into the World Book of Records, UK, under the distinguished title of “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration,” celebrating its role in hosting the planet’s largest and most dramatic land-based animal migration.

The listing recognises the annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, a natural wonder that has made the reserve world famous for its scale, spectacle, and ecological value.

According to Santosh Shukla, President of the World Book of Records, the inclusion is not just about numbers, but a recognition of the Maasai Mara’s global importance.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in World Book of Records under the distinguished title: ‘World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration’ for hosting the largest and most dramatic annual land animal migration on Earth,” he said in a letter addressed to Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu dated July 15, 2025.

He added that the certification honours Kenya’s leadership in wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism, and acknowledged the country’s contribution to global biodiversity.

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu welcomed the announcement, saying it is a moment of pride for the country and a reflection of the dedicated conservation efforts taking place on the ground. He credited the achievement to reforms and investment rolled out in the last two and a half years.

“Upon assuming office two and a half years ago, my administration launched an ambitious campaign to restructure and revitalize the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with the objective of preserving and enhancing this invaluable natural asset,” said Ntutu.

Among the measures taken were the rollout of a comprehensive management plan, strengthening of ranger operations, and improvement of roads and conservation technology across the reserve.

“Today, we are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious recognition from the World Book of Records, UK, officially certifying the Maasai Mara National Reserve as the home of the world’s greatest annual terrestrial wildlife migration,” he added.

The migration, which sees massive herds travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti into the Kenyan side of the ecosystem, is a critical period for mating and grazing, ensuring the continued health of wildlife populations across the region.

Governor Ntutu stressed that this movement not only draws visitors from around the world but also plays a major role in Kenya’s biodiversity, with the reserve hosting over 25 percent of the country’s wildlife species.

“This recognition is a proud moment for Kenya, for Narok County, for our conservation partners, and for all who cherish the Maasai Mara. We celebrate it with joy and extend a warm invitation to the world: come and witness this marvel of nature with us. Visit the Maasai Mara, where every crossing is a testament to life’s resilience,” he said.

To mark the occasion, a formal presentation of the World Record Certificate is expected to be held at the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Dates and details of the ceremony will be confirmed by the World Book of Records team.

The World Book of Records, which operates across all continents, is a global authority on exceptional achievements and heritage preservation.

Its certification places the Maasai Mara among the most outstanding natural landmarks in the world, recognised not only for their beauty, but for their role in shaping environmental awareness and conservation action.
