Kenyans lead in generosity, outpace global and African averages- Report

A notable 38% of volunteers gave their time 3 to 5 times during the year, indicating regular and committed engagement.
Kenyans emerged as some of the most generous people in the world in 2024, according to the newly released World Giving Report 2025 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in partnership with the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF).
The report, which surveyed giving behaviours in 101 countries, shows that 86% of Kenyans donated money, significantly surpassing the global average of 64% and the continental average of 72%. This reflects the country’s deeply rooted culture of community support and religious generosity.
2024 was marked by economic challenges, and Kenyans did not shy away from helping others. Nearly half of the population volunteered their time, contributing an average of 20.6 hours per person.
A notable 38% of volunteers gave their time 3 to 5 times during the year, indicating regular and committed engagement.
Furthermore, 21% of Kenyan donors gave 12 or more times in 2024, a figure well above the African (17%) and global (13%) averages. This positions Kenya among the most consistently generous nations globally.
“These numbers are a clear reflection of Kenya’s strong community spirit,” said Grace Maingi, Executive Director of KCDF. “Despite the high cost of living, Kenyans continue to support their neighbours, religious institutions, and charitable causes.”
The report also underscores a shift in the motivations behind giving. For most Kenyans, donating is a conscious choice driven by belief in a cause, religious values, community support, and the desire to inspire the next generation.
However, the report also points out that trust and transparency are critical to increasing donations. About 61% of Kenyans want to see the impact of their giving, while 47% say they are more likely to give if the charity sector is well regulated.
KCDF, which has worked for nearly three decades to empower Kenyan communities, believes that promoting community philanthropy is the key to sustainable development. The foundation supports local giving efforts through capacity building and advocacy for social justice.
The World Giving Report 2025 paints a hopeful picture of Kenya’s civil society, driven especially by youth engagement and local action.
It affirms that even in hard times, acts of kindness and generosity thrive in Kenyan communities and lay the foundation for a more just and resilient society.
