Narcotics worth nearly sh. 1.8 million seized in Samburu after tip-off

A joint security operation in Samburu has led to the seizure of narcotics valued at about sh. 1.8 million, following a public tip that triggered a swift response from officers.
The multi-agency team, including officers from Archers Post Police Station, National Police Reservists, and rangers from Samburu National Reserve, acted after residents reported a suspicious white Toyota Probox traveling along the Isiolo-Marsabit route.
Witnesses said armed men were unloading luggage from the vehicle near the Waso Nyiro River.
When security personnel arrived, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunshots. However, the suspects fled into nearby bushes before they could be arrested.
A search of the scene uncovered two green sacks left near the riverbank. Inside, officers found bundles wrapped in yellow and grey cello tape believed to be cannabis sativa. The drugs weighed 62.65 kilograms with an estimated street value of sh. 1,879,500.
The seized narcotics were taken into custody as investigations continue. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and called on the public to provide any information that could help identify or capture them.
Members of the public are urged to report any useful details to the nearest police station or security agency.
This operation in Samburu is part of a wider nationwide campaign targeting drug trafficking and abuse. Similar actions recently led to arrests in Kilifi and Nairobi, where suspects were found with narcotics or involved in trafficking and illegal alcohol distribution.
Authorities emphasize that combating drug abuse is a top priority, with increased surveillance and coordination among agencies throughout the country.
