Mwagodi said the threats to his life have persisted since he resurfaced in the Kinondo area of Kwale County.

Human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi has raised alarm over his safety, claiming he is being followed by unknown individuals since returning to Kenya after a reported abduction in Tanzania.

Addressing journalists outside Mombasa Central Police Station on Saturday, Mwagodi said the threats to his life have persisted since he resurfaced in the Kinondo area of Kwale County.

Flanked by his mother and fellow activists, he described his experience as deeply traumatic.

“There is a clear intention to eliminate people like me. What I went through was horrifying. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” he said.

Mwagodi, a hotel worker who was based in Kigamboni, said he was seized while heading to work last week and was later dumped in a bush across the border in Kenya.

His family believes his involvement in recent Gen Z protests and outspoken activism may have made him a target.

After returning home, Mwagodi attempted to report the loss of his personal items, including his phone, wallet, ATM cards, and official documents, but was turned away by police officers at Mombasa Central.

He was reportedly told to lodge the complaint at Diani Police Station in Kwale, where he was first received by local authorities after being found. “I am a Kenyan seeking justice in my own country, yet I have been denied a chance to record my statement,” he said.

Rights group Vocal Africa, through its CEO Hussein Khalid, condemned the refusal by police to take Mwagodi’s statement, calling it a violation of basic procedure.

“Any Kenyan has the right to report a crime at any police station. It is then the responsibility of the receiving officers to forward the matter to the appropriate jurisdiction,” Khalid said.

He warned that the way Mwagodi was treated reflects a growing problem, where victims of politically sensitive cases face resistance from the authorities.

“This undermines confidence in law enforcement and raises concern over equal access to justice,” he added.

Mwagodi’s situation has drawn attention from civil society groups, who are now demanding an independent probe into both the abduction and the police response following his return.

“This is not just about Mwagodi. It’s about ensuring that no citizen feels unsafe or unheard after a traumatic event,” said Khalid.

Police are yet to issue a public comment on the case.
