Former Chief Justice David Maraga has now received backing for his 2027 bid from a gathering of opinion leaders at the Ibara Viongozi Kebirigo Pastoral Centre, Kisii.

Maraga had convened his clansmen on Sunday, March 30, to seek their counsel, support, and approval before reaching out to the broader Kenyan electorate.

Led by former councillor Nelson Onyancha Onduko, the leaders commended Maraga for prioritizing the views of his clan in his political journey. In a show of unity, they pledged their full backing and vowed to rally the Gusii community behind his candidacy.

"As leaders from his Bonyamatuta clan, he has sought our views and we have given him a go-ahead of his plans of seeking for the top seat in the country,” Onduko told journalists.

He noted that the former CJ served Kenyans well during his tenure at the judiciary, and he can equally do the same and better if elected president.

The endorsement comes after Maraga announced he will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election, saying he is ready to offer himself for the top job from where he will be able to initiate change.

He also refuted claims circulating on social media that he was a project of President William Ruto in the presidential race, dismissing them as baseless.

"At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait and in due course you will make your mind yourself whether or not I'm a state project," he was quoted saying by the Star.
