Detectives have arrested a popular Mombasa-based TikToker over a viral video authorities claim amounts to sedition and incitement to public disorder.

Shedrack Omondi Okindo, popularly known as Hon. Mosquito, was picked up by officers in the Miritini area of Mombasa following the release of the video on August 1, 2025.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the video, which circulated widely on TikTok, featured Okindo defending three former security officers who are currently in police custody.

DCI alleges that the video contained threats of violence and incited the public against the government, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.

The clip is said to have triggered concern among the public and authorities, leading to a forensic trail that guided detectives to Okindo’s alleged hideout. He was swiftly apprehended and taken in for interrogation.

Upon searching his residence, investigators reportedly recovered two pairs of tactical combat fatigues, three mobile phones, assorted documents linked to a group called the Justice Direction Party, and a notebook that read, "We are going to apply guerrilla resistance tactics – Justice to all freedom heroes."

Okindo is currently being held as he awaits court proceedings.

His arrest comes amid a broader investigation into individuals linked to a group accused of mobilising former and current security officers against the state. On Friday, detectives arrested police officer Hiram Kimathi at his house in the Kambakia area of Makutano, Meru County.

Kimathi, whose service status remains unclear, had previously defied a transfer to Turkana, leading to a standoff. Police allege he is one of the founders of a group called Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI), which is being investigated under terror-related charges.

Kimathi was taken before the Kahawa West Law Court on Monday, where police requested to continue holding him as investigations proceed.

Two other individuals connected to the group;  Jackson Kuria Kimani, alias Cop Shakur, and former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer Patrick Osoi, are also in custody.

The court has allowed their detention for 14 days as officers continue probing various claims under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.

Police say they had been searching for Kimathi for some time before cornering him at his residence, where he eventually surrendered.

Authorities believe the group, through its FBI movement, was actively recruiting current and former officers and encouraging resistance to official commands.

Osoi, who is also a United States Army veteran and claims to have served in the National Intelligence Service (NIS), has publicly stated his intention to contest for the presidency in 2027 under the FBI banner.

A notice of motion filed during Osoi's arraignment at the Kahawa Law Courts last Wednesday accuses him, Cop Shakur, and Kimathi of founding the FBI group and engaging in unlawful recruitment efforts.

Osoi is expected to be charged with preparing to commit a felony, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and offences related to terrorism facilitation and recruitment.

Cop Shakur was arrested at the Kahawa Law Courts when he appeared in solidarity with Osoi during his arraignment. Both were presented in court on Thursday, where a magistrate ordered their detention for 14 days pending further investigations.

All three suspects have denied the allegations against them.
