Siaya Governor Orengo returns publicly, assures Kenyans he is well

Speculation grew about his health and role within ODM, following the circulation of a letter claiming Orengo had resigned from the party due to health issues
Siaya Governor James Orengo has made his first public appearance after a lengthy absence, putting to rest concerns about his health and whereabouts.
The governor attended the funeral of former MP Phoebe Asiyo in Wikondiek, Homa Bay County, on Friday, August 8, where he joined mourners and addressed the public with a clear message about his well-being.
Orengo arrived late and was introduced by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga before making his way to the podium.
He greeted President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga before addressing the gathering.
Showing no signs of ill health, the governor said, “I am sorry I have arrived late. I am with you in all that has been said. I want to reiterate that I am alive, I am a stone and there is nowhere I am going.”
The governor’s absence from public view had raised questions and sparked rumors, but Siaya County Secretary Joseph Ogutu confirmed that Orengo was abroad handling a private matter related to his official duties.
Ogutu reassured the public, stating, “There is no cause for concern. The governor is away on a private mission that is part of his executive responsibilities.”
When asked for details about the private mission, Ogutu declined to provide specifics, citing confidentiality and protocol.
“The nature of the business remains private, and therefore, I cannot comment on the same. That would be a case of insubordination since the County Speaker had also issued a statement stating that he is on a private mission,” he explained.
Ogutu also did not confirm when Orengo would return, emphasizing that the timeline was confidential.
The governor’s absence had caused worry both in Siaya and across the country, especially after he was barely visible in recent county activities.
Speculation grew about his health and role within ODM, following the circulation of a letter claiming Orengo had resigned from the party due to health issues.
The letter, dated August 4, 2025, alleged that the governor stepped down immediately after consultations with family and doctors.
However, ODM quickly dismissed the letter as fake, urging the public to “ignore it and focus,” in an official statement.
Orengo’s return and reassuring words are expected to calm fears and affirm his continued role as Siaya’s governor and a key figure in ODM.
