Several lives are feared lost after an ENA Coach bus headed from Nairobi to Migori was involved in a deadly crash late Saturday night in the Mai Mahiu area, Nakuru County.
The collision occurred at about 11 pm along the steep and winding Mai Mahiu climb, a stretch notorious for its dangerous gradient.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was struck from behind by a trailer whose brakes are believed to have failed. The impact caused the bus to overturn, with several other vehicles, including private cars, caught up in the wreckage.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, ferrying injured passengers to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.
Officials have yet to confirm the exact number of victims.
Photos from the scene show a harrowing aftermath mangled vehicles scattered across the road and the ENA Coach bus lying on its side, a grim reminder of the night’s events.
The incident comes in the wake of another major tragedy just a day earlier, in which 25 people perished in Kisumu County. That crash involved a school bus carrying mourners from a funeral, which veered off the road at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway and overturned in a ditch.
Ten women, ten men, and a young girl died instantly, while 20 others sustained injuries, five of them critical. Four more victims succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Authorities, including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), have launched investigations into both incidents, with the causes yet to be officially established.
