The government has put emergency preparedness measures in place as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rainfall and potential flooding across the country.

Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the government is fully mobilized to respond quickly to any emergencies that may arise.

Speaking during a church service at St Andrew’s AIPCA Church Mailune in Igembe North, Meru County on 17th Aug, Ruku stated that the Ministry is working closely with disaster agencies including the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), Kenya Red Cross, National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), and the National Youth Service.

“This is a multisectoral effort. Every department under special programmes has been directed to act proactively. We are focused on mitigating the effects of floods before they occur, not just reacting after the damage is done,” Ruku said.

He urged residents along the Tana, Nzoia, Budalangi, and Nyando rivers to move to higher ground and follow official safety advisories. Response teams are on standby nationwide to ensure timely intervention.

CS Ruku also addressed recent unrest in Siakago Town, where clashes between Muguka and Ambeere traders led to looting and vandalism. He called for calm and unity, noting that local leaders must promote peaceful coexistence.

In addition, he lined out government initiatives aimed at improving service delivery, including plans to decentralize Huduma Centre services to village levels.

On food security, Ruku defended the fertilizer subsidy reforms, emphasizing support for genuine farmers while curbing corruption. He also noted ongoing investments in education and healthcare, citing Social Health Authority reforms to prevent misuse of NHIF funds.

Speaking to youth, CS Ruku encouraged participation in National Youth Service programs.

“NYS is not just about uniforms. It equips young people with skills, discipline, and a foundation for future employment and service to the nation,” he said, urging them to take advantage of available training and empowerment opportunities.
