Kenya Red Cross confirms 15 hurt in Mombasa road crash , no fatalities reported

Red Cross said the victims had been rushed to nearby health facilities and assured the public that no deaths had been recorded.
Fifteen people were left nursing injuries after a road accident at Kibarani in Mombasa on Sunday night, August 24, 2025.
The crash involved a public service vehicle and a cargo container, bringing traffic along the busy stretch to a standstill before emergency responders intervened.
In its first update, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed the accident and said victims had been rescued by members of the public. “A road traffic accident involving a PSV matatu and a cargo container has occurred at Kibarani, just after Ug Holdings, Mombasa County,” the statement read.
The agency added that its officers were already working with other teams to respond to the emergency. “We are on the ground responding alongside a multi-agency response team,” it said.
Later that night, the Red Cross issued a second update confirming that fifteen people had been injured. It said the victims had been rushed to nearby health facilities and assured the public that no deaths had been recorded.
“Update: Fifteen people sustained injuries and were taken to health facilities by well-wishers. Thankfully, no lives were lost. The scene has been cleared,” it noted.
Authorities had not established the cause of the accident by the time of reporting, with the National Police Service yet to release an official statement.
The incident occurred just two days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir presented a report highlighting why road accidents had increased in August 2025.
The report cited three key factors—damaged roads, reckless behaviour by drivers, and mechanical faults in vehicles.
“Our findings underscore that poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and vehicle defects remain the leading causes of fatalities,” Chirchir stated during the briefing.
He explained that the ministry would focus on repairing hazardous road sections while partnering with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enforce tighter compliance with KS 372:2019 standards through enhanced vehicle checks.
The ministry’s figures further showed that between January 1 and August 10, 2025, at least 2,933 people had died in road accidents across the country.
