Raila Odinga has already held two meetings with assembly leadership over the past four days—on Friday and Monday—urging MCAs to reconsider the impeachment plan.

ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga has called an urgent meeting with Nairobi County Assembly MCAs today at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Upper Hill.

The session is aimed at discussing the growing push to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy, Njoroge Muchiri.

The summons, sent by Majority Whip Moses Ogeto, reflects the party’s effort to manage the political tension within the county assembly.

“Good Morning Hon Members you are hereby invited by Party Leader, H.E Raila Amollo Odinga for a consultative meeting at Jaramongi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) today 2nd September 2025 as from 10.00am. Kind Regards,” reads the message seen by Radio Generation.

Governor Sakaja’s position is increasingly precarious as opposition within the assembly gathers strength.

Raila Odinga has already held two meetings with assembly leadership over the past four days—on Friday and Monday—urging MCAs to reconsider the impeachment plan. However, both discussions ended without consensus, leading to today’s critical session.

Support for the impeachment is growing, with 87 MCAs now reportedly backing the motion, up from 70 last Friday.

Even though the county assembly is on a one-month recess until September 23, Standing Orders allow the Majority Leader to request a special sitting if at least 41 of the 123 members support it—a step the MCAs are prepared to take.

Efforts to slow down the impeachment process have so far failed, as signature collection has accelerated despite initial party intervention.

Last Friday, a lengthy meeting at Odinga’s Karen home, attended by Sakaja, began at 10:00 am and stretched into the evening without reaching a solution.

Odinga reportedly instructed the governor to resolve MCAs’ grievances, such as releasing funds for bursaries and development projects, and promised to engage both majority and minority leaders.

Another meeting held yesterday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation lasted several hours but did not produce a definitive agreement.

MCAs have compiled over 20 charges against the governor, describing the initiative as driven by the entire assembly.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai told reporters, “We have the motion ready. We have the charges ready, more than 20 substantive charges against the governor. We passed the threshold in the fifth minute of collecting signatures. This time it is a whole House initiative.”

Alai noted that Sakaja could not rely on political protection this time. “You know, when there is always a tiff between MCAs and the governor, he runs to Raila Odinga and gets saved. This time it will not be easier for him because the issues at hand are between him and the MCAs and not Raila,” he said.

Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi criticized the county executive for ignoring assembly oversight and failing to implement resolutions. “This is a member-driven initiative.

The target is 116 signatures, and we are not turning back,” she said, noting that both Sakaja and his deputy would face separate impeachment motions.

The meeting is expected to involve all House leaders, including the Speaker, Majority and Minority leaders and their deputies, as well as the Whips and their deputies.

Party sources say discussions may extend late into the day as ODM attempts to consolidate its approach to the fast-moving political situation.
