In a statement issued on Tuesday, the senate clarified that the bill does not in anyway proposes extension of term limit for the president and other elected leaders, warning Kenyans  not to fall for fake news and terming the claims in circulation as fake.

The Senate has dismissed claims that the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeks to extend the terms of the president and other elected leaders from five to seven years.

The clarification comes following an online debate that the bill seeks to extend the presidential term, sparking public uproar.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Senate clarified that the bill does not in any way propose extension of term limit for the president and other elected leaders, warning Kenyans not to fall for fake news and terming the claims in circulation as fake.

"This information is incorrect. A review of the official Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, shows that the claims being made are false," read the statement.

The Senate clarified that the bill's real aim is to strengthen the Senate's role in the budget process and law-making to better protect devolution.

The statement also states that the executive structure remains intact, and the bill does not mention any plans to create the Office of the Prime Minister.

"The Bill makes no mention of creating the Office of a Prime Minister or any other new position within the executive branch. The proposed amendments do not alter the existing structure of the national executive," stated the Senate.

The legislative house maintains that the bill focuses on fixing procedural issues in Parliament to better support county governments, not on altering term limits or the structure of the executive.
