The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) has raised alarm over the growing number of building collapses across the country, particularly in Mombasa.

The association has emphasized the need for a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach to tackle this issue, calling for enhanced compliance with building regulations and better development control mechanisms.

In a statement on Friday, AAK Mombasa Branch Chairman Duncan Odhiambo expressed deep concern about the frequency of such incidents, stressing the necessity for coordinated efforts from all relevant sectors.

"Our position on these recurring events is that there is a need for a multi-sectoral approach to ensure a coordinated effort towards streamlining development control and ensuring compliance with building regulations," Odhiambo said.

The association has been proactive in advocating for safety within the construction industry, with one of its flagship initiatives being the 'Mulika Mjengo' campaign.

This program tracks construction site inspections and offers detailed reports, highlighting areas of concern.

"Additionally, AAK has been conducting continuous training programs and benchmarking with other countries that uphold best practices in promoting a safe and sustainable built and natural environment," Odhiambo explained.

Furthering its commitment to improving safety, AAK has called for the inclusion of its professional experts, such as architects, engineers, and planners, in the Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC).

These professionals would ensure design compliance, structural integrity, and adherence to zoning regulations, crucial elements in preventing building collapses.

The latest incident, where a building dangerously tilted toward Pwani Road, reignited calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations.

A preliminary assessment by AAK leadership pointed to the failure of the ground-floor columns as the main cause.

"We await the official report from the National Building Inspectorate, part of the Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC), which has taken the lead in the rescue operations and the imminent demolition of the building," Odhiambo stated.

AAK has urged the County Government of Mombasa to strengthen its oversight and compliance capacity.

"We seek to enhance and reinforce oversight and compliance by replicating the 'Je una mjengo?' Campaign, which was widely successful in Nairobi," Odhiambo said.

The association believes that reinforcing regulatory compliance and promoting safe building practices among developers are essential steps in ensuring the safety and sustainability of construction projects.
