Kalonzo's latest position marks a tougher stand compared to previous election cycles, sending a strong signal as political formations begin to shape up ahead of 2027.

Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has drawn a clear line on his political ambitions, declaring that he will not be a running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

In a candid television interview on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the former vice president dismissed suggestions that he could once again back another candidate, saying his eyes are firmly set on the presidency.

Kalonzo described ongoing speculation about him joining Kenya Kwanza or playing second fiddle as a deliberate smear effort. He argued that such claims are being pushed by those keen to undermine his influence, particularly through what he termed as an orchestrated misinformation drive.

“I don’t think I would be a running mate in 2027. I will tell you why. Some of my supporters, a majority of them, and that is why this administration is vexed with the dream that Kalonzo Musyoka will join Kenya Kwanza; the bloggers are on a full-scale mandate to make it happen, but I tell them, ‘Please stop wasting your time.’ It is too late for any games to be played against me,” he said.

The WPF leader further emphasized that his political journey has long been anchored on sacrifice, but this time, he intends to pursue nothing short of the top seat.

He noted that Kenya is in need of a new vision that restores hope and stability, and he expressed confidence that his allies in the opposition will rally behind that cause.

“In my entire personality, I have sacrificed, but I can’t sacrifice enough for this country. We have a higher idea of getting this nation back to its feet, and if that be the case, I pray to God my colleagues will see it,” Kalonzo stated.

His latest position marks a tougher stand compared to previous election cycles, sending a strong signal as political formations begin to shape up ahead of 2027.

Kalonzo has previously taken the deputy role in three different elections;  2007, 2013, and 2017  making his declaration a potential turning point in coalition talks and succession planning.

Within the opposition, key figures positioning themselves for the presidential race include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugine Wamalwa.

Kalonzo’s announcement is expected to influence how these leaders approach alliances and strategy in their bid to unseat President William Ruto.
