IEBC voter registration drive kicks off today

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today, Monday, September 29, 2025, explained its new continuous voter registration program, outlining where and how Kenyans can register or update their voter details ahead of future elections.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak, IEBC Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana said the process is fully devolved and accessible in all parts of the country.

Mukhwana emphasized that voter registration is no longer confined to temporary mass drives but will instead take place throughout the year at established offices.

“The 290 constituencies, IEBC has an office. It is called a constituency office because it's located at the constituency. So the continuous voter registrations will be happening in the constituencies, constituency headquarters, all 290,” he explained.

This means every eligible Kenyan can access registration services at their constituency office, whether they are registering for the first time, transferring their polling station, or updating personal details.

The Commissioner stressed that the exercise is inclusive, bringing together all sectors of society to ensure maximum participation. “We have involved practically every citizen that we can lay our hands on. We have involved the political leadership both in the opposition and in the government, we have involved the locals, we have involved the people on the ground,” he said.

According to Dr. Mukhwana, this collaborative approach ensures that the registration process is trusted and understood by communities across the country.

Although Mashuru in Kajiado County served as the symbolic site for the rollout, the Commissioner made it clear that the exercise is not limited to one region.

“We chose Mashuru just like we have chosen any other place. This is a pastoral community and we thought it would be a good point to go and launch our continuous voter registration,” he said.

The choice was meant to reflect inclusivity by engaging pastoralist communities, which have often faced challenges accessing the electoral services.

Dr. Mukhwana confirmed that registration activities will happen today simultaneously across the country. “From today, the X-rays will be open in all the constituencies countrywide. In fact, as we go live today, the same will be happening simultaneously in the various constituencies,” he said.

This simultaneous rollout demonstrates IEBC’s commitment to ensuring that every constituency receives equal attention and access to voter registration services.

The Commissioner highlighted that this marks a significant shift from Kenya’s previous voter registration model, which relied heavily on short-term campaigns before elections.

By adopting a continuous system, IEBC aims to spread registration evenly across electoral cycles, reduce last-minute pressure, and give citizens more time to exercise their democratic right.

“This is an official launch to mark the onset of the continuous voter registration,” he said.
