The United Democratic Movement (UDM) Party Leader and Mandera Senator, Ali Ibrahim Roba, has reflected on the party’s history, recalling its humble beginnings in 1999 when it was denied registration.

He said that following years of persistence, UDM has become Kenya’s second oldest surviving party and is now the fifth largest. Roba noted that the party’s growth is rooted in its values of justice, equity, and service to the people.

He was speaking when he unveiled four candidates to fly the party’s flag in the forthcoming by-elections slated for November 27, 2025. The event underscored both UDM’s political resilience and its loyalty to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.

During the ceremony at the party headquarters in Nairobi, Roba presented nomination certificates to Fredrick Odhiambo Ochiel, who will contest the Ugunja parliamentary seat in Siaya.

Stephen Amwayi is the party nominee for Kisa East Ward in Kakamega, Onchaga Rashid Mariera will run for Chewani Ward in Tana River, while John Meyan will vie for Lake Zone Ward in Turkana.

“As we present these candidates, we reaffirm that UDM is a proud, loyal, and vibrant member of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. A stronger UDM means a stronger coalition, deeper grassroots reach, and broader national unity. When UDM grows, the coalition grows. And when the coalition grows, Kenya wins,” Roba emphasized.

He added that the party’s involvement in the by-elections is part of its commitment to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political future.

“Together, we are shaping the future of our nation,” he said.

The by-elections are expected to be a critical test of strength for political parties ahead of the 2027 General Election. UDM, a coalition partner in the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance, aims to expand its presence at both constituency and ward levels while reinforcing its role within the ruling coalition.
