The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is set to begin its grassroots elections today.

Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna explained that the elections aim to encourage active community participation, instilling a sense of ownership and responsibility among citizens towards their governance.

"The party expects a wide range of candidates to compete for positions, representing the diverse landscape of grassroots leadership and ensuring a broad range of voices and perspectives within the party," Sifuna noted.

To prepare for this important electoral event, the party has launched a comprehensive outreach campaign to educate voters about the election process.

In Kisumu yesterday, local MPs, including Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron, led an effort to encourage residents to take part in the democratic process.

Oron highlighted that the initiative is focused on raising voter awareness and addressing the widespread apathy that often surrounds grassroots elections.

“The elections will employ a transparent voting process, with stringent measures to ensure fairness and security,” Oron stated confidently.

Deputy Governor Mathews Owili, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, Nyando MP Jared Okello, Kisumu County MP Ruth Odinga, youth coordinator Bob Onyango (alias CEO), and Kisumu County Assembly minority chief whip Seth Kanga joined him in the effort.

The leaders highlighted that media representatives, along with observers and volunteers from various civil society organizations, will oversee the election process, ensuring a commitment to a fair and transparent election.

As the elections take place, Owili noted that they will not only serve as a method for choosing local leaders but will also provide an opportunity to promote democratic values, accountability, and community development.

The elections will begin tomorrow at the ward level, with branch elections set to follow on April 9.
