County Secretary Joseph Ogutu said the government is deeply concerned by the incident and pledged support for injured healthcare workers, while urging calm and dialogue.

The County Government of Siaya on Thursday condemned the violent attack on striking nurses that occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, near its headquarters.

County Secretary Joseph Ogutu said the government is deeply concerned by the incident and pledged support for injured healthcare workers, while urging calm and dialogue.

In a statement released on Thursday, County Secretary and Head of Public Service Joseph Ogutu expressed concern and condemned the violence.

“On behalf of the County Government of Siaya, I wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the violence meted against our striking nurses. Such acts are unacceptable, unjustifiable, and contrary to the spirit of dialogue and mutual respect that we continue to uphold as a government,” Ogutu said.

He added that every professional, including frontline health workers, has the right to air grievances in a peaceful and lawful manner without fear of intimidation or attack. The County extended its apologies to the nurses who were injured and wished them a quick recovery.

Ogutu urged nurses and stakeholders in the health sector to channel their concerns through established avenues of engagement rather than resorting to public demonstrations.

“The County Government of Siaya has always been, and remains, open to constructive dialogue with health professionals and all County Government staff on matters welfare and work. Indeed, records show a history of successful engagements with our nurses and other cadres, where solutions have been reached amicably and in good faith,” he stated.

The County stressed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of staff, ensuring a conducive working environment, and prioritising the healthcare needs of the people of Siaya.

Officials said they would continue to work closely with nurses and healthcare workers to address legitimate concerns while strengthening service delivery.

The County Government has called on relevant security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Ogutu further called on relevant security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to book.

As part of immediate measures, the Head of County Enforcement Unit and all enforcement officers who were on duty at the time of the incident have been sent on 30 days compulsory leave with immediate effect.

This decision, Ogutu says, is meant to pave the way for a full investigation into the undesirable incident.

While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the County appealed for restraint and calm.

“County Government of Siaya values and appreciates all staff regardless of their positions and cadres. We urge calmness, restraint, and a return to dialogue, even as we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to support our healthcare workers and protect the dignity of public service and professionalism,” the statement read.

He concluded by reassuring staff and residents that the County Government remains firm in its commitment to dialogue, fairness, and professionalism in handling matters of public service.
