The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that ongoing rains across several parts of the country will continue through Sunday, October 5, with some regions expected to experience heavy downpours accompanied by strong winds.

According to the latest weather update, rainfall will persist over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal Region, and parts of the Rift Valley.

The department cautioned that certain areas may receive between 20 and 50 millimetres of rainfall, warning that the showers could be intense and may be accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

“Heavy (20–50mm) is likely in some of these areas — and may be accompanied by gusty winds.”

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas, as flooding may occur even in places where it has not rained directly due to runoff from upstream regions.

“Members of the public are advised to stay alert and avoid crossing or walking through moving water,” the advisory read.

“Strong winds could cause damage to trees, power lines, and weak structures.”

The update came a few days after the department warned that rainfall would intensify in both amount and geographic coverage from Friday October 3, 2025, through to Sunday, October 5, 2025.

October typically marks the beginning of the short rains season in Kenya, which runs from October to December.

These rains are important for agriculture but also pose risks, particularly in urban areas such as Nairobi, where poor drainage systems frequently lead to flash floods.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Pedestrians should avoid walking through flooded areas and open drains.
