Three people were injured on Saturday evening following a suspected hand grenade attack at a hotel in Mandera Town.

According to a police report filed at the Mandera Police Station under OB No. 48/4/10/2025, the incident occurred at around 6:40 pm at Jakkey Hotel, located in the Corner B area of Mandera East Sub-County.

The hotel, which is said to be frequented by non-local residents, was reportedly targeted by unknown assailants who hurled what police suspect to be a hand grenade.

“The blast left three patrons injured. They were identified as Dominic Muthui, 35, who sustained injuries on both hands and his left leg; Steven Musyoka, 30, who was wounded on his left hand; and Willy Okiya Kemboi, 32, who suffered injuries to his right leg,” police said.

All three victims were rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital, where they were treated and are currently reported to be in stable condition.

Police officers from Mandera East, including the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO), the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), and officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), visited the scene shortly after the incident.

Security agencies led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have since launched a multi-agency clearance patrol in the area to pursue the attackers and enhance surveillance around Mandera Town.

Mandera, which borders Somalia, has in the past witnessed sporadic attacks linked to extremist groups targeting civilians and security personnel.

Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as investigations continue.

Mandera East Member of Parliament, Hussein Weytan, in a statement, condemned the Saturday night attack.

He described the incident as tragic and one that has left the community traumatized.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the explosion that occurred at Corner B Hotel in Mandera Town on Saturday night, which left three individuals seriously injured. This tragic incident has left the community traumatized,” Weytan said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the injured. I commend the medical team who are working tirelessly to provide them with the treatment they need.”

The legislator called on authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion to guarantee the safety and security of residents, even as he called for unity among residents.

“I also call on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of this explosion to ensure the safety and security of all our citizens,” he said.

“Let us come together in unity and compassion as we support one another through this moment of hardship. Mandera is strong, and together, we will overcome.”
