The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has issued a warning to Kenyan nationals travelling to Mozambique, urging them to strictly adhere to immigration regulations and avoid overstaying their permitted duration of stay.
In a statement dated October 1, 2025, the High Commission noted an increase in cases of Kenyans exceeding the 90-day visa-free period granted under the 2018 Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports.
"The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has observed an increase in cases of Kenyan nationals overstaying in Mozambique, contrary to the Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports between the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Mozambique, which has been in force since 2018," the statement read in part.
The commission warned of legal repercussions to Kenyans exceeding the 90-day period citing violations of Mozambican laws.
“Exceeding the authorized 90-day period amounts to a violation of Mozambican immigration laws and attracts penalties, including possible legal repercussions,” they warned
The Commission further explained that the visa waiver agreement only applies when the purpose of stay aligns with the conditions for which a visitor’s permit may be issued, such as tourism, business, or short-term official visits.
"Kenyan nationals holding valid ordinary passports or equivalent travel documents with a minimum validity of six (6) months are permitted to enter Mozambique without a visa for visits not exceeding ninety (90) days. provided the purpose of stay aligns with that for which a visitor's permit may be issued," the statement read.
The commission urged travelers to observe the permitted duration to avoid prosecution.
“The High Commission therefore urges all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique to strictly comply with the permitted duration of stay to avoid inconveniences, fines, or other sanctions,” the statement added.
The advisory comes as both countries continue to strengthen bilateral ties, with the exemption agreement intended to ease travel and promote trade and cultural exchanges between Kenya and Mozambique.
The High Commission’s latest reminder highlights the importance of compliance with host country immigration laws, ensuring that citizens can continue to benefit from visa-free travel without jeopardizing the agreement’s future.
