An elderly man on Tuesday morning died within the Bungoma Law Courts premises, where he had an ongoing case.
In a statement after the incident, the judiciary said the man arrived at the court compound around 9 am, and appeared visibly unwell. He arrived on a motorcycle.
Given his condition, the man was assisted by an official of the court who handed him a priority card.
“At around 9 am the man, appearing elderly and visibly unwell, was carried into the court compound on a motorcycle. On account of his condition, a Customer Care Officer handed him a Priority Card," Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemo stated.
“This is a card given to elderly persons, expectant mothers, PWDs, and those who are sick, giving them access to prioritized and expedited service so that they spend as little time as possible at the courts.”
It was later established that the man’s case was before the Environment and Land Court.
The elderly man informed officials that he would wait for his advocate to arrive and proceeded to lie down on the grass outside, accompanied by his brothers.
A court official who went to update him on his case later found him unresponsive.
Police officers were called in and confirmed that the man had died.
The body was taken to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital Morgue, and police processed the scene.
