Videos and photos circulating online captured scenes of students assembled outside the university, lighting a fire to protest what they described as ongoing security lapses on campus.

Students at the Egerton University’s main campus in Nakuru County on Monday, April, 7, 2025, held protests over rising insecurity within the institution.

The unrest reportedly erupted during the night following an alleged attack on a female student by unidentified individuals inside one of the campus hostels.

According to Citizen Digital, the student suffered serious injuries to her head and limbs, with some witnesses claiming the attackers may have used a machete during the assault.

The incident ignited anger among the university students, prompting them to stage protests outside the campus gates as they called on the administration to take swift action regarding the security concerns.

Although the university management has not yet issued an official statement, local police have initiated a manhunt to apprehend the suspects, whose identities remain unknown.

This incident at Egerton University comes just three days after a similar protest erupted at Maseno University, where students demonstrated following an attack on one of their peers.

The April 5 demonstrations at Maseno University were triggered by the death of Boaz Zachary, a third-year student who was reportedly assaulted and fatally injured by unknown assailants outside the campus.

Boaz, who also earned a living as a part-time boda boda rider, is said to have been attacked and killed during a robbery in which his motorcycle was stolen.

Frustrated and angered by the incident, students marched to the nearby Maseno Police Station—just about 100 meters from the university—accusing the officers of failing to apprehend those responsible.

The protest escalated as students blocked the Kisumu-Busia highway, a vital route connecting Kenya and Uganda, causing significant transport disruptions and forcing motorists to find alternative roads.
