Mombasa Governor Abdulswammad Shariff Nassir has confirmed that one of the three people who went missing after a boat capsized at Tudor Water Sports during the Ocean Festival has been found dead.
The body was identified as that of Caleb Otieno, 21, by his mother, Janet Adhiambo.
Governor Nassir said only family members were allowed to view the body for identification.
The tragic incident occurred on Mazingira Day during the East Africa Ocean Festival, which began on October 9.
Governor Nassir urged the public to remain calm as the Kenya Navy and other rescue teams continued their search.
“As the County Government of Mombasa, we will fully support the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) in strictly enforcing maritime safety regulations without exception, including at privately organized leisure events,” said Nassir.
“We can confirm the recovery of one body. The search and rescue operation continues until the remaining two are found and returned to their families for a dignified burial.”
Mombasa County Transport Executive Dan Manyala said the recovery efforts would persist despite challenges caused by poor visibility.
“The waters are still muddy, and the tides make it difficult,” he said. “But our officers are experienced, and we are making progress as conditions gradually improve.”
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who visited the scene, praised the rescue teams for their dedication and pledged government support for both the recovery efforts and the affected families.
“Thanked all agencies involved in the search and rescue, including non-governmental groups and volunteers, Mombasa Governor Abdul Swamad Shariff Nassir, MPs Mohammed Machele (Mvita) and Badi Twalib (Jomvu) for standing with the residents and families at this difficult moment,” Kindiki said.
