President William Ruto on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), describing them as the living shield of the nation.

Speaking during the marking of Kenya Defence Forces Day at Moi Barracks in Eldoret, Ruto commended the men and women in uniform for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering devotion to duty, saying their sacrifices have safeguarded Kenya’s sovereignty and stability.

“Every soldier who dons the Kenyan uniform carries the hopes, safety, and dignity of millions of our citizens,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to supporting soldiers and their families.

The President outlined four key priorities aimed at strengthening the KDF — improving welfare, enhancing training, modernising equipment, and reinforcing psychological and spiritual support.

He said expanded healthcare, better housing, and family support programmes were central to the welfare reforms, while advanced training facilities and international collaborations would help sharpen Kenya’s military readiness.

“We have fast-tracked the acquisition and modernisation of defence systems and strengthened cyber and intelligence capabilities,” Ruto said, noting that the battlefield is evolving and Kenya must stay ahead of emerging threats.

He lauded the KDF’s role in operations such as Linda Nchi, peacekeeping missions under the African Union, and humanitarian efforts during natural disasters.

Ruto also praised the military’s contribution to national development through infrastructure projects, including roads, hospitals, schools, and the Talanta Stadium.

“The story of KDF is the story of what is possible when Kenyans choose excellence over mediocrity,” the President said, urging citizens to emulate the soldiers’ discipline and commitment in all spheres of national life.

Ruto called on Kenyans to work closely with security agencies to sustain peace and stability, warning that national unity is essential for progress.

“The soldier’s mission is not theirs alone; it is ours collectively as a nation,” he said.

“To every member of the Kenya Defence Forces, you are the shield and sword of our Republic. You carry the hopes of generations, the pride of our people, and the dignity of our flag.”
