Leaders pay tribute to Raila Odinga, celebrated champion of democracy

Kenya is in mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a leader celebrated for his patriotism, advocacy for democracy, and dedication to pan-African ideals.

His passing on Wednesday morning has drawn heartfelt tributes from leaders across the country who reflected on his enduring influence and vision for Kenya and Africa.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed profound grief over the loss of Raila Odinga, describing it as both personal and national. In his message, Uhuru said, “The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation, a silence where once there was a voice of thunder and conviction.”

Reflecting on their political journey, Uhuru noted that despite their earlier rivalry, they built a bond of mutual respect through the Handshake.

“That journey from fierce political opponents to partners in the pursuit of ‘Handshake’ unity taught me the true measure of the man. I saw firsthand his unwavering passion for this country, his deep-seated belief in justice, and his incredible capacity to think beyond personal ambition for the sake of national peace,” he said.

He described Raila as both “a formidable opponent” and “an invaluable ally in the cause of reconciliation,” adding, “I have lost a friend and a brother.”

Uhuru extended his condolences to the Odinga family, saying, “We have lost a father to the nation, a steadfast champion for the people, and a true son of Kenya. His legacy is not just in the political battles he fought, but in the peace he helped build. Rest in peace, my friend. Your work here is done, but your echo will never fade.”

Chief Justice Martha Koome also paid tribute to Raila Odinga, calling him “one of Kenya’s most enigmatic and consequential leaders.” She noted his courage, sacrifice, and commitment as pivotal to Kenya’s democracy. “His name is forever etched in the annals of our democratic journey,” she said.

Koome highlighted Raila’s patriotism, commitment to justice, equality, and women’s empowerment. “His unwavering support for the women's movement marked him as a true believer in inclusive leadership,” she said.

She also praised his contributions to constitutionalism, urging Kenyans to defend the freedoms he fought for.

Koome extended her condolences to the Odinga family and all Kenyans, saying, “May his family and all Kenyans find comfort in the knowledge that his life’s mission was not in vain. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe remembered Raila Odinga as “a towering statesman and one of the foremost architects of Kenya's modern democracy,” highlighting his lifelong dedication to justice, equality, and national unity.

“His courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the rights and freedoms of all Kenyans have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history,” noting that his legacy will inspire generations," Kagwe added.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga described Raila as a transformative leader with a vision that shaped Kenya and Africa.

“I am shocked to learn of the demise of former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a patriot, a pan-Africanist, a democrat and a leader who made significant contributions to democracy in Kenya and in Africa,” Maraga said.

He further stated, “Kenya has lost one of its most formidable leaders who shaped the trajectory of our beloved country. Africa has lost a leading voice in pushing for peace, security and development. The world has lost a great leader.” He extended his condolences to the Odinga family, the people of Kibra Constituency, and Siaya County, adding, “May the Lord comfort us all as we deal with this enormous blow.”

Central Organization of Trade Unions Secretary General Dr. Francis Atwoli described Raila as “the glue that held our country together during moments of political misunderstanding,” noting that his mentorship influenced leaders across the political spectrum, including President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa remembered him as “a towering statesman, fearless defender of democracy, and unifying force for Kenya and Africa. His courage and vision shaped generations. My heartfelt condolences to his family, the ODM fraternity, and all Kenyans.”

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo described Raila as a visionary patriot whose dedication to democracy and justice helped define Kenya’s identity.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering statesman, visionary leader, and true patriot whose unwavering dedication to democracy and justice shaped the soul of our nation. Kenya has lost one of its greatest sons, whose courage and conviction will forever remain an enduring inspiration,” the Governor said.

Irungu Nyakera, patron of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, called him a transformative figure committed to Kenya’s democratic growth.

“I am heartbroken to learn of Raila Odinga’s passing. He was a towering figure, courageous, visionary, and deeply committed to Kenya’s democratic progress. His impact on our nation and our people will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace, Baba,” he said.

Constitutional lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi described Raila as “the most consequential politician in Kenya in the past three decades.”

He added, “He will be missed at many levels. At the political scene, he left few enemies, some allies and many orphans. To Mama Ida and the kids… poleni. A political giant has rested.”

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed paid tribute, recalling Raila as “a visionary leader, a mentor, and one of the strongest supporters of local football.”

He added, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga. Having had the privilege to work under him, I can say he was not only a great leader and visionary, but also a good boss and a personal friend. Kenya has lost a true statesman and local football, one of its strongest supporters.”
