The Senate has announced that it will convene a special sitting on Thursday, October 16, 2025, to pay tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to a Gazette Notice published on October 15, 2025, by Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi, the sitting was called in line with Standing Order 33 (1) following a request from the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of senators.
The session will take place in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, starting at 2:30 pm and will focus solely on a motion to eulogize and honour the late Odinga for his service and contribution to the nation.
“In accordance with Standing Order 33 (5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the special sitting,” the notice read.
Once the motion is concluded, the Senate will adjourn until Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 2:30 pm, as per the Senate Calendar.
The special session follows the government’s declaration of a seven-day national mourning period in honour of Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s second Prime Minister and played a significant role in the country’s political and democratic journey.
The National Assembly has also dedicate its entire Thursday sitting to honouring and eulogizing the late former Prime Minister.
During Wednesday’s afternoon session, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced that Thursday’s special sitting would begin at 10 am and continue late into the night, allowing every MP the opportunity to pay tribute to the man affectionately known as Baba.
“We will begin in the morning and go on until every voice has spoken,” he said.
“It will be a day to remember Baba, to share the memories, the lessons, and the dreams he leaves behind.”
Wetang’ula urged MPs to attend the session dressed in black or dark attire and to wear black ribbons as a sign of solidarity and respect.
“Let us come in a sombre state and in dark colours to show our unity in mourning and our gratitude to a leader who gave his all for Kenya,” he advised.
