John Koech, the former Cabinet Minister and long-serving Member of Parliament for Chepalungu, has passed away at the age of 79, following a prolonged battle with illness.

His family confirmed the heartbreaking news early this morning, leaving a nation in mourning for one of its most respected political figures.

Koech, who held several key positions during his political career, including serving in the Cabinet, was known for his unwavering commitment to public service and his contributions to both the national and local communities.

His political journey was marked by significant achievements, particularly in the areas of education, infrastructure, and health, which have had a lasting impact on his constituency.

As a Cabinet Minister, Koech played a crucial role in shaping national policy, always putting the needs of his people first.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a true patriot, a devoted family man, and a steadfast servant of the people," said the family in a statement.

"He fought valiantly against illness in recent years, but now, he is at peace. Our hearts are heavy, but we are grateful for the years we had with him."

Koech’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Chepalungu, where he not only served as a Member of Parliament but also as a leader who advocated for progress and unity.

He is remembered for his humility, dedication, and tireless efforts to improve the lives of those he served.

Tributes have poured in from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens alike, including President William Ruto.

"Mheshimiwa John Koech was a hardworking leader who served the people of Chepalungu with dedication. He was focused, progressive, and development-conscious. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this sad moment. Rest In Peace," posted the President on his X account.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula said Ambassador Koech was a champion of access, equity, and excellence in education, particularly in the former Kericho and Bomet districts, where he opened doors for countless young minds.

"I had the honour of serving alongside Hon. Koech during the transformative era of President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. In him, I witnessed a man of rare political clarity principled, astute, and unwavering in his pursuit of national progress," said Wetangu'la.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen described the late Koech as an embodiment of servant leadership and firm principles.

Posting on his X account, CS Murkomen said:  "A mentor of many, he encouraged me to pursue a career in politics and I owe him a debt of gratitude for his guidance. I'm deeply saddened by the news of his demise."

"I wish to extend a message of heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Chepalungu whom he ably represented in Parliament for a long time," he added.
